Local waste diversion

The framework for city and county waste-reduction programs.

What AB 939 established

California’s Integrated Waste Management Act assigned waste-diversion duties to cities, counties and approved regional agencies. It set a 50% diversion requirement for 2000; later legislation made that an ongoing annual requirement.

CalRecycle now evaluates jurisdiction performance using disposal measurements and implementation of waste-reduction programs. The requirement applies to local governments and does not certify an individual dumpster rental company or recycling facility.

What it means for your project

Use the local permit, waste-management plan and applicable recycling rules to identify your project’s duties. Keep disposal and recycling records tied to the correct job address.

365 provides recycling receipts and material diversion reports for project documentation. Send required forms and reporting formats before service begins.
